Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome! Below are answers to common questions about working with a licensed landscape architect and what to expect from the design process.

What’s the difference between a landscape designer, landscape architect, and landscape contractor?

And which one are you?

Landscape Designers
Designers come from many backgrounds—some study horticulture or garden design, others are self-taught through hands-on experience. Training and credentials vary widely, so it’s always worth asking about someone’s education and portfolio.

Landscape Architects
That’s me! Landscape architects are licensed professionals who complete accredited university degrees in Landscape Architecture (BLA or MLA) and pass multi-part state licensing exams. Our training covers everything from site planning and grading to planting design, ecology, and construction detailing.

I’ve spent more than a decade designing residential landscapes and currently work at a multidisciplinary firm that creates public parks and playgrounds. My private practice focuses on a select number of residential, estate, and productive landscape projects each year—bringing the same rigor and creativity to every site.

Landscape Contractors
Contractors are the builders who make the design real. They manage grading, drainage, utilities, and construction to meet code and quality standards. I partner almost exclusively with Northwest Native Landscapes, a trusted local contractor I’ve worked with for over a decade. Together, we provide clients with a seamless design-to-build experience.

How much does it cost for a professionally installed landscape?

Every site and project is unique, but here are general ranges:

  • Urban gardens and smaller lots: start around $30,000–$75,000 for a full installation
  • Comprehensive or estate properties: often $75,000–$150,000+, especially when including patios, decks, irrigation, fire features, or custom stonework

If your design includes grading, hardscapes, and new planting throughout, expect to invest toward the higher end of that range. I tailor each design to fit your goals, site, and budget.

I plan to install my own garden. Can you still help?

Yes! I offer Design Consultations for homeowners who want expert input without a full design package.

These are focused, on-site sessions—perfect for smaller spaces or DIY installations. We’ll walk your property together, identify opportunities, and sketch out concepts or planting ideas you can implement over time.

Consultations typically start around $400 for a 2-hour onsite visit and are a great way to get professional direction from the start. Additional consult time is billed at my hourly rate of $150/hr.

Do you take on larger or productive landscape projects?

Yes. In addition to residential gardens, I take on a limited number of productive landscapes each year—working farms, orchards, or larger estates that combine function and beauty.

As the author of Modern Homestead and founder of HipChickDigs.com, I bring practical experience in regenerative systems and sustainable land use, bridging aesthetics with productivity.

How do I start a project with you?

If you’re ready to explore your project, complete the Contact Form with details about your site, goals, budget, and timeline.

Because I only take on a few projects at a time, I prioritize clients who are ready to collaborate on thoughtful, high-quality landscapes that reflect their lifestyle and values.
